Natural dye care

Natural dyes are very different to synthetic dyes. They come from nature and do not pollute or create toxic waste. They feel beautiful to touch, and as the colour comes from natural living things, they have a life of their own that cannot be compared to chemical dyes.

Like most things worthwhile, they do require some care in order to maintain their beauty and increase their longevity.

  • Natural dye is colour extracted from elements of nature – plants, roots, tree bark, leaves, flowers, herbs, food waste and spices.

It is biodegradable, non-toxic and non-allergenic, making them better for the environment and for use around humans. They don't have any carcinogenic components which are found in many synthetic dyes.

  • Use mild, earth-friendly detergent.

Most mild, natural detergent brand will do. Please avoid detergents with high Ph ingredients - such as lemon. We have been washing our naturally dyed clothes for years and use “Earth” brand and never had an issue.

If you choose to use a stronger chemical based detergent it is quite possible that the ingredients will react with the plant dyes and potentially change the colour of your TOR piece.

  • Cold machine wash with similar colours. For silk and wool items, please use appropriate delicate settings on your washing machine

  • Dry naturally out of direct sunlight. Avoid machine drying.

  • All natural dyes (like synthetic dyes) will fade or change a bit over time - after all the colour comes from natural living things and have a life of their own!

Natural dyes are sensitive to changes in PH. It is best to be careful when handling acidic liquids (citrus, wine, vinegar) or alkaline liquids (baking soda, etc.).
